Eighteen children in eleven families have been born in Greece, with donor sperm from Denmark that carried a genetic mutation with a dramatically increased risk of cancer.
According to an announcement by the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction, the clinics have been informed, which in turn are informing the families that received the genetic material of the man in question from Denmark for further testing.
"Because the possibility cannot be ruled out that the future biological descendants of the donor in question will exhibit clinical symptoms related to Li-Fraumeni Syndrome, the Supervisory Board of the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction has decided: The universal prohibition of the disposal and use of the donor's reproductive material in the future and the implementation of actions by the Medically Assisted Reproduction Units regarding recipients who have completed complete cycles of medically assisted reproduction with the donor's reproductive material," the announcement notes.
"It is noted that the donor had undergone the necessary tests in accordance with the legislation of the country of origin, which do not provide for testing for the specific rare hereditary mutations in the gene in question," concludes the National Authority for Medically Assisted Reproduction.
