Thessaloniki: The 93-year-old woman who sold trinkets in a street market was acquitted

The 93-year-old woman from Thessaloniki who was accused of illegally selling terlikia in the public market was vindicated.

The Three-member Misdemeanor Court of Thessaloniki, where she was referred to stand trial, acquitted her of practicing outdoor trade without the required permit.

Seated in a wheelchair, the 93-year-old stated that she was not engaged in any commercial activity. "I used to give away the trinkets. I had 4-5 pieces left and went to sell them. I didn't know he needed permission for that," she noted in her apology.

The case became known in April 2019, causing reactions, as, in addition to her arrest, she was also fined by the competent DOU, amounting to 2600 euros.

In fact, the then President of the Hellenic Republic, Prokopis Pavlopoulos, intervened in the matter with his statement, calling on the authorities to behave with humanity and solidarity. The fine had been canceled by the decision of the head of the Independent Public Revenue Authority Giorgos Pitsilis.
