According to the Fire Department, the fire has been brought under control and 26 people were released from the hotel, eight of whom were minors. Twelve people were taken to the Health Center with respiratory problems.
On the spot, 26 firefighters with 8 vehicles tried, while a special ladder truck was mobilized for rescues.
"Man went to help people and got burned"
The president of the Hotel Union of Trikala Prefecture, Kostas Papapoulios, spoke to protothema.gr and said:
"Unfortunately the owner of the hotel is dead. The man went to help the people to save themselves and put out the fire, but in this effort, he burned himself and jumped from the balcony. When the EMS took him from the scene, the man was still alive but apparently succumbed to his injuries. As far as I know the people staying at the hotel are all fine and we are now arranging their transfer to another hotel."
"We are overwhelmed"
Yiannis Kouroupas hotelier in Kalambaka said: "My hotel is close to it. I woke up at 7 in the morning and saw thick black smoke coming out of the hotel located in the center of Kalambaka. There was no flame but only thick smoke that filled almost all the spaces. Firefighters freed many visitors. We learned that at least some people went to the hospital with breathing problems. We also learned that our colleague and owner of the unit passed away. We are overwhelmed!”
