Varoufakis's answer to the Eurogroup for the referendum

The Minister of Finance, Giannis Varoufakis, made public his dramatic speech at the Eurogroup on Saturday, which met after the announcement of the referendum. He describes how he reacted when his colleagues asked him to leave the room, but also how he responded when other finance ministers remarked that the subject of the referendum would be "yes" or "no" to the euro.

According to Mega, Giannis Varoufakis said: "Those who say that, in fact, this is a referendum on the euro, my answer is: 'You can say that, but I will not comment. This is your judgment, your interpretation. Not ours! There is a logic to how you see it, but only if there is an indirect threat that a no from the Greek people in the proposal of the Institutions will follow moves to get Greece out of the euro, illegally. This threat will not be consistent with the basic principles of European democratic governance and the European legal framework. In addition, he pointed out that the recession will increase, while adding that the measures he envisages can not be passed by the Greek parliament. In fact, referring to the referendum, he emphasizes that the question will not concern yes or no to the euro. Yanis Varoufakis tried to reassure his European colleagues that if the result of the referendum is "yes", then the Greek government will implement the agreement with lenders. "Some are worried that a 'yes' vote will be a vote of no confidence in our government - as we will propose a no vote - and in this case we will not be able to promise the Eurogroup that we will be able to sign and implement an agreement with the Institutions. This is not the case. We are committed democrats. "If the people give us a clear mandate to sign the institutions' proposals, we will do whatever it takes to do so, even if it means a reformed government," he said. if he can issue a statement without unanimity, and if he can meet without the participation of a minister, saying: "I got the following incredible answer: The Eurogroup is an informal body. It is therefore not bound by conditions or written regulations. Despite the fact that unanimity is conventionally observed, the president of the Eurogroup is not bound by specific rules. I leave the reader to comment on this remarkable statement ", notes Mr. Varoufakis in his blog.Source: news.in.gr
