The President and the Members of the Community Council of Acheritos express their indignation for the closure of the branch of the Cooperative Central Bank.

According to the President of the Community, Michalis Kaounas, the recent closure of the branch of the Cooperative Central Bank was the beginning of an economic and social catastrophe for the Community of Acheritos.

According to Mr. Kaounas, Acheritou is a large community in the province of Famagusta with more than 3 thousand inhabitants. Nevertheless, following the closure of the branches of Laiki Bank, Hellenic Bank and Bank of Cyprus, the recent closure of the Cooperative Central Bank branch dealt a financial blow to the entire Acheritos community.

According to the President of the Acritos Community, after the Turkish invasion which led to the occupation of almost the entire community in 1974, the second biggest blow comes with the absence of a banking institution, with the result that more than three thousand inhabitants are forced to suffer and They go by road to the branch of the community of Avgoros, which, however, is in charge of serving the residents of Liopetri, Xylofagos and Frenaros and other communities.

At the same time, adds Mr. Kaunas, the absence of banking institutions in the remote community of Acheritos, in addition to the problem of occupation and refugee, has created a huge blow to businesses and shops in the area, due to their inability to serve, while older people unable to drive to the nearest banking institutions, are in despair.

Mr. Kaunas expressed his indignation at the fact that according to him no one was interested in the community of Acheritos and its inhabitants who have been experiencing the drama of occupation and refuge for 44 years, while he wondered whether some have made a profit from the closing branches, as it is questionable, as he said, that the four banks had profits over time, while today they do not.

He also said that the Acheritos Community Council is requesting the free concession of the SKT branch to serve the residents and that it will convene in an extraordinary scheduled session during which much stronger measures will be decided, which, as he said, will surprise everyone. He went on to say that the area of the settlement of Vrysoullon, which belongs to the occupied community of Acheritos, remained alive on the ramparts and guarded Thermopylae for 44 years. He therefore called on all the Famagusta MPs to stand by the community and its residents.
