The unions are expected to hold a new meeting today with the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Yiannis Panayiotou, regarding the issue of Automatic Indexation (ATA).
According to statements by the Secretary General of the Greek Confederation of Labour, Andreas Matsas, the meeting was scheduled following an invitation from the Minister.
The unions announced last Wednesday, after the pan-union meeting held at the SEK offices in Nicosia, their decision to escalate the strike measures, should this be deemed appropriate.
As Mr. Matsas stated on Wednesday, flanked by the General Secretary of the PEO, Sotiroula Charalambous, the President of the DEOK, Stelios Christodoulou, and the General Secretary of the PASYDY, Stratis Mattheou, the unions responded to the invitation for today's meeting "with a positive attitude". He also called on the Ministry and the employers' side "to get involved in a process, which will be within the framework of the transitional agreement, so that the institution of the ATA can be fully restored".
For his part, the Minister of Labor, Yiannis Panayiotou, stated last Monday, on the sidelines of his presence at the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights, that the constructive contribution of all parties that make up the tripartite social cooperation is necessary.
"The position of each side in relation to the priorities it sets must be respected. However, in order to reach an agreement that is commonly accepted, no one is expected to fully achieve what they consider right. Otherwise, if each side insists exclusively on its own positions, it makes this effort much more difficult," he said.
