Nothing new about the 6% increase in electricity – EAC requested a new extension

There is nothing new in relation to the increases in electricity prices, with EAC General Manager Adoni Yasemidis stating before the Parliamentary Trade Committee that the EAC Board continues to study the matter both in terms of the 13% increase and of 6%.

"In the budgets in the finance committee, we said through the mouth of our President that the Board of Directors, after being informed by the technocratic group of the finance department is examining the data, is very close to reaching their decision, we still need a few days", said Mr. Jasemidis.

When asked about the 13% increase, Mr. Yasemidis said that this is also under study, noting that the proposed 6% increase concerns expenses incurred mainly in 2022.

The President of the committee, Kyriakos Hatzigiannis stated that today the consumer pays "unrealistic electricity costs" and noted that EAC is a systemic factor and should not proceed the way it is proceeding, making millions of profits and asking for additional money, as he said. He reiterated that EAC's request to impose new increases is not substantiated.

A representative of CERA, stated that the Authority has received a classified letter from the Board of Directors of EAC, which is being examined.

Loukas Aristodemou, president of the All Cyprus Union of Consumers and Quality of Life, said they came to the session expecting a decision not to impose the 6% increase. "What in the world? Let them come out and talk about it. Unfortunately, zero result", he said, referring to misidentification of the citizen.

"75% to 80% of citizens are starting to have problems and electricity is a basic commodity. They should have given us a prize, they are selling us the sun," he concluded.

For his part, Marios Drousiotis, president of the Cyprus Consumers' Association, said that he attended the committee's session for the third time and was waiting for an answer. "From session to session we expect an answer. I get annoyed if anyone asks consumers if they can stand any new increase. It's a question that shouldn't be asked," he said.

Closing the issue, Mr. Hatzigiannis stated that the committee will continue to monitor the whole issue.
