A decrease was recorded in February in most categories of basic products monitored by the Consumer Product Price Observatory of the Consumer Protection Service. However, the significant increase in vegetables and greens continued.
According to a press release from the Service, the majority of the 45 main categories recorded a decrease in prices, with 32 categories showing a decrease, while 13 recorded increases, of which 6 at a rate of less than 1%.
These fluctuations, as reported, are also in line with the fluctuations recorded by the Statistical Service of Cyprus for the month of February. Specifically, the Statistical Service has recorded a significant decrease in the inflation rate to 1,9% compared to 2,5% in January and 2,6% in December, which is due to the changes recorded in the categories "clothing and footwear" by -5,1%, "education" by +3,7%, "restaurants and hotels" by +3,5% and "food and non-alcoholic beverages" by +2,25%. The largest increase at category level was recorded by agricultural products with a change of 6,9% compared to February 2024 and 2,7% compared to January 2025.
Regarding the categories recorded by the Price Observatory, an increase compared to the previous month was recorded for frozen burgers +16,5% (+12,8% compared to February 2024), vegetables and greens by +14,0% (+45,6% compared to February 2024), fresh fish and molluscs by +8,0% (+18,9% compared to February 2024), vegetable cooking fat by +3,9% (-7,6% compared to February 2024), frozen breaded/pre-cooked meat by +2,9% (-1,0% compared to February 2024), LPG cylinders by +2,1% (+9,5% compared to February 2024) and Cypriot coffee by +1,4% (+13,2% compared to February 2024).
32 categories recorded a decrease compared to the previous month, the most significant being frozen molluscs/shellfish by -19,8% (-18,1% compared to February 2024), frozen fish by -7,4% (-4,6% compared to February 2024), cheeses by -2,7% (-6,0% compared to February 2024), fresh meat/poultry/rabbit by -2,5% (+5,7% compared to February 2024), canned meat by -2,4% (-1,8% compared to February 2024), frozen breaded/pre-cooked fish by -2,4% (-15,0% compared to February 2024), breakfast cereals by -2,0% (+1,7% compared to February 2024), legumes by -1,8% (+1,7% compared to February 2024), baby food by -1,8% (+7,3% compared to January 2024), coals -1,8% (-1,6% compared to February 2024), frozen pasta by -1,7% (-3,7% compared to February 2024) and pasta by -1,5% (-4,5% compared to February 2024).
The Observatory presents the weighted average price for 250 basic consumer products (food and other products) based on the quantities and prices per day, at which these products were sold in 400 retail stores nationwide throughout the month.
The Consumer Protection Service clarifies that Price Observatories are prepared solely for consumer information purposes and in no way constitute advice. Price Watchers are not intended and cannot substitute for the market research that each consumer should do based on their own preferences, data and needs, nor are they intended to indicate to consumers which outlets to choose or specific products.
It is particularly noted that some of the products included in the Observatory have quality differences that cannot be determined.
