The Easter table is not canceled, Andreas Hadjiadamou, Executive Secretary of the Cyprus Association of Supermarkets, told CNA on Tuesday, adding that those who are cultivating panic are refuted by the market data itself.
As reported to the Cyprus News Agency, the only real increase recorded so far concerns LPG, with a charge of 4,5 euros per cylinder, while there are no corresponding price increases for the other basic products.
An end to alarmism about lamb and prices
----------------
Mr. Hadjiadamou clarifies that the market is not out of control, despite the pressures being recorded.
"In every crisis we hear the same thing. Exaggerations before there is even any real data," he notes, deconstructing scenarios about shortages and outrageous prices for lamb.
As he emphasizes, there will be sufficiency and the market has alternative solutions, even under pressure.
In relation to reports of prices reaching 20 euros per kilo for lamb, he underlines that "they have nothing to do with reality."
Offers are coming during Holy Week
----------------
"So far, there has been no significant increase in lamb compared to last year, while contrary to what is being reported, experience shows that as Holy Week approaches, prices fall, due to intensification of offers," he said.
According to Andreas Hatziadamou, "supermarkets will absorb part of the pressures, reducing their profit margins," sending a message of support to consumers.
At the same time, it targets the phenomena of profiteering that occur along the supply chain, calling for responsibility on all those involved.
He told CNA that "there are cases of unjustified increases and we must be careful not to give them space."
Unique increase in LPG
———————————–
He made particular reference to the issue of LPG, pointing out that this is the only category in which a clear increase was recorded.
As Mr. Hadjiadamou mentioned, the price has increased by 4,5 euros per cylinder, referring to cases of "unjustified price increases" in the market.
He emphasized, in fact, that such phenomena will not go without a reaction from the Association, underlining the need for interventions where practices are identified that unreasonably burden consumers.
Normally the Easter table
------------
When asked if supply has been pressured, he admitted that there are pressures, however, he stressed that there is no question of meeting demand.
He said that supermarkets maintain open lines with suppliers in Cyprus, Greece and other European countries, with imports being a ready option if needed.
Asked if there is any concern about quality from abroad, Mr. Hadjiadamou replied that "there is no concern about the quality of the products either, which is ensured through strict food safety protocols."
Finally, he clarified that the Easter table - not only is it not threatened - but will move at the same levels as last year, both in terms of availability and prices.
"The coming days are expected to confirm in practice that the noise of recent weeks was much greater than the real picture of the market," he noted.
