E/K crossings to the occupied territories decreased by 4% while T/K crossings to the free territories increased by 18% in the first 9 months of this year.
According to today's front page of the Dialog newspaper, which cites "official" data, from last January to September, from the 9 crossing points, 2.198.000 people crossed to the "north", as it is referred to in the occupied territories, while in 2023 the corresponding figure was 2.302.000.
In the first half of 2024 the number of T/k that passed to the "south", as it refers to the areas under the control of the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, was 2.158.000 compared to 1.840.000 last year in the same period.
In the report, data from the "central bank" is invoked and it is stated that the T/c buy more meat and vegetables from the G/C side, but also some household products. The newspaper comments that the "market is going south" and this is because, due to inflation and accuracy, many T/C now cover more and more of their needs in markets from the free areas instead of the occupied ones.
Dialog also publishes on the front page a photo of cars queuing at the Agios Dometios barricade and writes that due to the sales that started last Friday with Black Friday, the queues at this crossing were huge even last night.
