The submission of applications for the National Electronic Identity (eID) begins today, Monday, with eligible Cypriot citizens over 18 years of age, holders of a Biometric Identity Card.
In a presentation last week, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, Nikodimos Damianou, stated that the Government is subsidizing 100.000 electronic ID cards for Cypriot citizens, with the first 30.000 electronic ID cards being made available free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis, and the remaining 70.000, at a final cost to the citizen of €15.
Mr. Damianou said that the electronic identity (eID) is the unique, secure identity of every citizen in the online world and allows identification in public and private online services, while at the same time providing the holder with the ability to sign electronic documents with absolute security, and with the same legal force as a handwritten signature.
The electronic signature has already been integrated into the Ippodamos system, while it is planned to be gradually integrated into other government systems, such as the Department of the Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property and the Department of Road Transport, which are currently in the implementation phase.
In a first stage, by obtaining their electronic identity, the citizen will be able to enter the Government systems, through CY Login, using their eID codes.
The national electronic identity of the Republic of Cyprus has already been approved by the European Commission at the highest level of security and recognizability (“High Assurance”) within the framework of the eIDAS Regulation, with the registered name: IDMe.cy.
