The summer solstice occurs when one of the Earth's poles tilts toward the Sun at its most extreme angle, and because of the Earth's tilt, this happens twice a year. In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs in June (while the southern hemisphere experiences the winter solstice), and in the southern hemisphere it occurs in December (while the northern hemisphere experiences the winter solstice).
"Always speaking of the Northern Hemisphere, summer has an official first day from the moment the Sun enters the northern part of our planet's sky. This phenomenon is called the summer solstice, and this year it will occur on June 20, 2024, at 23:50 p.m. This will be the shortest night of the year and the day on June 20 the longest", astrophysicist Stelios Tsangaridis told KYPE.
Asked about weather forecasts, he said that all weather research organizations (climate conditions ie temperatures, rain, etc.) are predicting that this summer will be extremely hot.
"And judging by the signs we have at the end of spring and June, they are not wrong to make these predictions. It is important to keep in mind that the forecasts for the climatic conditions come from statistical models that feed the climatic data of each region", said Mr. Tsangaridis.
He recalled that NASA has already released "a very alarming graph of temperature change since 1880 which shows 2023 as the warmest year on record and already 1.36 ºC warmer than pre-industrial measurements at the end of the 19th century." century".
"So I don't think the news is good, since 2024 already looks warmer in most areas where measurements have been recorded," he concluded.
