Over 10.000 Turkish Cypriots participated in yesterday's protest demonstration against the "government". The demonstrators, who gathered following a call from the Turkish Cypriot trade unions KTÖS, KTOEÖS, a total of 75 organizations, expressed their opposition to the "government" and the recent decision on the "second disciplinary decree", related to the mandatory use of the headscarf in schools.
According to the "Yeni Douzen" report, the demonstration was dominated by messages in favor of the secular regime.
Speaking at the central demonstration held in occupied Nicosia, KTOEÖS President Selma Eylem stressed the importance of popular resistance and called on the “government” to resign, stating that “we will not recognize either the decree or you.” Similarly, KTÖS President Mustafa Baybora stressed that religion should not be used for political purposes.
Without waiting for the end of the demonstration, the Chairman of the Renaissance Party (KA) and “Minister of Transport”, Erhan Arikli, made statements regarding the mass mobilization, characterizing it as “disrespect”. Mr. Arikli announced that his movement will organize an event today entitled “Respect to Turkey” in response to the demonstration.
Also, the Turkish Cypriot press focuses on the "government's" move to finally approve the controversial regulation that allows the use of the headscarf in secondary education.
