The Minister of Defense expressed the hope that women aged 18 to 26 will express interest in joining the National Guard, so that the institution will have substance.
Speaking on state radio, Vasilis Palmas stated that the needs of the National Guard are ongoing and permanent.
He noted that women who decide to enlist will subsequently have the opportunity to join the ranks of the SYOP.
He also mentioned that the incentives include some informal agreements with private universities, to grant a 50% discount on tuition for women who will serve in the National Guard.
The discount applies to the entire duration of the course.
Referring to the decision to appoint a military officer and not a member of the police as commander of the presidential guard, Mr. Palmas said that usually abroad, the heads of the guard of presidents and prime ministers are military personnel.
He also mentioned that it was President Christodoulides' wish for a military man to take over this specific post, while indicating that the previous time something like this had happened, it was during the presidency of Archbishop Makarios.
