The Government decided today to extend the institution of security guards to all secondary schools throughout Cyprus.

As stated after the Cabinet meeting, the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athina Michailidou, the body approved the extension of the institution of security guards to all secondary schools throughout Cyprus as, as she noted, the evaluation of the institution in high schools and technical schools was particularly positive.

Answering a question, Mrs. Michailidou noted that the institution had already been implemented in 35 high schools and 11 technical schools, and now the Government is proceeding with their installation in 62 high schools throughout Cyprus.

"Through specific and targeted cooperation with private security companies and approved private security guards for the surveillance of the premises, we are proceeding to expand the institution to all high schools based on our previous announcements and in the context of the safe school measure, which we are implementing in last year and a half," he said.

The Minister of Education noted that the Council of Ministers also approved the targeted support for school building infrastructure issues based on the prioritization of needs and the targeted utilization of funds.

"Specifically, we are exceptionally supporting the school authorities of Limassol and Nicosia for general maintenance of school buildings on the basis of prioritization, also the construction of multi-use rooms in communities such as Appesia, Trulloi and Mazotos, the construction of a new public and community kindergarten in Ypsonas, as well and the construction of a roof at a primary school in Ypsonas", he said.
