Women had higher life expectancy at birth than men in 2022 in all EU regions, including Cyprus, which is considered a single region at NUTS2 level, according to figures released by Eurostat, the statistical EU service.
In particular, in 2022 life expectancy at birth for women in Cyprus was 83,4 years, 3,7 higher than for men (79,7 years), close to EU averages where life expectancy life expectancy for women stood at 83,3 years, 5,4 years higher than for men (77,9 years).
Life expectancy at birth for women was highest in the Spanish capital Madrid region (87,7 years), while two other Spanish regions, the autonomous community of Navarre (86,9 years) and Castile, came in second and third and Leon (86,7 years).
The lowest life expectancy at birth for women was recorded in the French department of Mayotte in the French outermost region of Mayotte (74,4 years) on the Indian Ocean. This was followed by the northwestern (76,4 years), the north-central (77,0 years) and the southeastern (77,6 years) regions of Bulgaria.
Madrid ranked first in life expectancy at birth for both men (82,4 years), followed by the autonomous province of Trento in Italy and Sweden's capital Stockholm (both 82,3 years).
The lowest life expectancy for men was recorded in three regions where it was below 70 years: in the North-West Region of Bulgaria (68,7 years), Latvia (69,4 years) and the North-Central Region of Bulgaria (69,6 years ).
The largest regional gender differences were recorded in the Baltic countries and in several regions of Poland and Romania. The largest gap was recorded in Latvia, where life expectancy at birth for women was 10,0 years higher than for men.
Differences in life expectancy at birth between women and men were generally much smaller in Denmark, Ireland, the Netherlands and Sweden. However, the smallest gender gap was observed in Mayotte, France, where life expectancy at birth for women was 0,4 years higher than for men.
