Constantinou: Increase in flu cases, recession in COVID

An increase is observed in the incidents of infections, especially influenza A and B, while there have been 39 admissions to public hospitals, the Director of Medical Services and Public Health Services, Elisavet Constantinou, told KYPE, noting at the same time that there is a recession for the incidents of COVID in this period.

"Generally we had an increase in admissions from respiratory system infections. Most of the cases have been flu, then come numerically the cases of COVID and RSV is last,” he said.

It is an image, he noted, that we expected to see.

“There were around 39 flu admissions last week. Generally there is an increase in respiratory viruses but most are cases of influenza A and B. They are about the same percentage as last year," he added.

Asked about it, she said that 11,24% of the population have been vaccinated against the flu and more than 100 thousand flu shots have been administered.

There is an increase for now, he noted, when the incidents start to decrease then we will say we have reached the peak.

In relation to the COVID incidents, Mrs. Constantinou said that there is a recession in this period.

"For the previous week of February 5-11 there was a further decrease in the positivity rate and the number of cases, specifically the number of cases was 809 and the positivity rate has been reduced to 0,9%. By extension, admissions to hospitals and Intensive Care Units have also decreased. The reduction we had was in almost all ages," he added.

Mrs. Constantinou recommended that people continue to observe personal protection measures, which are the same for all respiratory viruses, i.e. personal personal hygiene of hands, distances, masks, confinement at home when there are symptoms of infection of the respiratory system and COVID.
