The Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works and the Office of the Commissioner for Gender Equality announce the operation of female figures at pedestrian crossing lights.
During the inspection of the placement of female figures at the pedestrian crossing on Mikis Theodorakis Avenue, in front of the Municipal Theater and the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alexis Vafeadis, stated that it is a small change with big messages. It is a move that embeds equality in our perception, giving the right messages to all ages. The placement of the female figures, he said, is a symbolic, but important initiative that reminds us that women participate actively and equally in the life of the city.
For her part, the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Ms. Tzozi Christodoulou, stated that the placement of female figures at pedestrian crossings marks the implementation of yet another action of the National Strategy for the horizontal promotion of equality between women and men. This is, she emphasized, a symbolic action, which breaks stereotypes and sends the message that women belong in all public spaces. Such actions, she concluded, contribute to changing perceptions, especially among young people, and promote issues of equality and participation.
By the end of November, the Department of Public Works will proceed with the construction, installation and operation of female figures at six pedestrian crossings, in Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta.
