Holy Monday marks the beginning of Holy and Great Week, the journey of our Lord Jesus Christ towards His voluntary Passion and Resurrection. Today, our Church commemorates two special events with deep spiritual meaning: the memory of Joseph of Pangalos and the condemnation of the barren fig tree.
Joseph the Fool – Type of Christ
Joseph, the beloved son of the Patriarch Jacob, is a type of Jesus Christ. He was envied by his brothers, thrown into a deep pit, and sold for thirty pieces of silver—all events that prefigure the Passion of Christ. His journey from trial to glory, from slavery to exaltation, is a living testimony of faith, patience, and forgiveness.
Despite the slander and imprisonment by Potiphar's wife, Joseph did not become bitter, but waited for God's time. When he wisely interpreted Pharaoh's dream, he became prime minister of Egypt and saved the entire people. His attitude towards his brothers is shocking: he did not take revenge, but embraced them with love. Like Christ, he forgave.
The Barren Fig – A Warning About Spiritual Barrenness
Today also includes the memory of the barren fig tree, which Jesus cursed, and immediately withered (Matt. 21:19, Mark 11:13). This act is not just a miracle of punishment, but a powerful spiritual image: it symbolizes the Synagogue of the Jews that did not bear spiritual fruit, but also every soul that lives without the fruits of virtue.
This action of Christ gives rise to a great teaching. When the disciples are amazed at how the fig tree immediately withered, the Lord teaches them the power of faith:
“If you have faith and are not divided… even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be removed and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done” (Matt. 21:21).
The Church invites us to live this week with strong faith, without hesitation, with the aim of allowing God's Grace to bear fruit within us.
The Bridegroom's Processions – Journey to the Passion
The devotional "Bridegroom's Services" begin today, with the stirring troparion:
"Behold, the Bridegroom comes in the middle of the night..."
These Services are held on Holy Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, and prepare us spiritually for the events of the Crucifixion and Resurrection.
