Saint Charalambos, whose memory is honored today, Monday, February 10, was a priest in Magnesia, Asia Minor.
It is estimated that he was born in 89 AD. He was arrested by the prefect of Magnesia, Lucian, during the period of the persecution of Christians (around 198 AD) launched by the emperor Septimius Severus.
He was cruelly tortured and beheaded at the age of 113 (202 AD), probably in Antioch on the Maeander.
His memory is honored on February 10 by the Orthodox Church, which gives him the epithet Hieromartyr. The same day also celebrates Saints Porphyrios and Baptist, two of the soldiers who were ordered to torture him and who, upon witnessing his martyrdom, became Christians.
Modern Miracle of Saint Charalambos
A modern Miracle for a heart patient of Saint Charalambos: "She has a special reverence for the Great Martyr Saint Charalambos, who first took care of the salvation of her soul and then of her body."
Mrs. E.L. from Athens had suffered a heart attack in 1992. She was worried about her health and went to Switzerland to have surgery at a hospital.
Before she left, they gave her the book "The Synaxaris of Saint Charalambos" and throughout the journey, as well as all night at the hotel, she read it and begged the Saint to help her.
At 6 in the morning, after a sleepless and agonizing night, Saint Charalambos appears to her, takes her hand and says:
"Why are you so anxious? I came to help you. But you need to fix a mess you made at home."
Why did you take the Crucified out of the room? (Indeed, the above lady had taken out an old crucifix to replace it with a new frame).
"You will put the Crucified One in the proper place," he continued, "and everything will be fine."
When E.L. was admitted to the hospital the next day for pre-operative tests, the doctors told her that she was completely healthy and to return to Greece.
The first thing he did was to visit the Holy Monastery of St. Stephen, where the Holy Cara is kept, to worship and thank the Saint.
Since then, she has had a special reverence for the Great Martyr Saint Charalambos, who first saw to the salvation of her soul and then of her body.
