The case of the two monks Nektarios and Porphyrios, which concerns the financial aspect of the scandal of the Holy Monastery of Saint Avvakum, has been adjourned again to February 13, at 09:00, for the purpose of a response.
The two monks appeared before the Nicosia Permanent Criminal Court today, where their defense attorney requested a postponement, saying that the delivery of witness material from the Prosecuting Authority is pending, which is expected to be given to them within the week, so that they can study it in order to be ready to respond to the charges.
The Prosecution Authority had no objection to the request, with the Court deeming the three-week period to be a reasonable period.
The court ordered that the defendants remain free under the same conditions.
The two accused monks face 24 charges, including conspiracy to defraud, committing a felony, unlawful possession of property worth 196 thousand euros, theft by proxy, forgery, circulation of a forged document, theft, money laundering, false tax return and interference in a judicial proceeding.
It is noted that the presumption of innocence applies to all defendants, until proven guilty by the court, beyond all reasonable doubt.
