Michael Tatham has been appointed the new High Commissioner of the United Kingdom to Cyprus, as announced by the Foreign Office.
The experienced 59-year-old diplomat, who joined the Foreign Office in 1987, will replace outgoing High Commissioner Irfan Siddique in November.
Mr Tatham was recently responsible for organizing the European Political Community meeting hosted by Britain and the UK-Africa Investment Summit.
He has been Deputy Head of the British Diplomatic Mission in Washington, Director of the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Department of the Foreign Office, Political Adviser to the British Permanent Mission to the United Nations, Ambassador in Sarajevo, Head of the Western Balkans Department of the British Foreign Office and previously (1995 ) head of the Eastern Mediterranean sector of the Southern Europe division of the Foreign Office.
In 2020 he was awarded the title of Companion of the Knightly Order of Michael the Archangel and Saint George (CMG) for his contribution to British foreign policy.
After his appointment was announced, Mr Tatham said it was a "tremendous honour" for him. “The UK and Cyprus have extremely close ties, which are based on the deep connections between the two peoples and the many shared interests. I feel fortunate to be taking on this role at a time of strengthening relations between the UK and Cyprus," he added.
