In view of the high temperatures predicted for the coming days in our country, the Ministry of Health urges the public to take the necessary protection measures against the heat wave, with the aim of preserving our health.
The Ministry of Health states that special attention is required for vulnerable groups of the population who are most at risk from the effects of the heat wave, infants and young children, the elderly, pregnant women, people with chronic diseases (heart disease, lung disease, diabetes, kidney disease) and people with limited mobility or our fellow citizens who live alone.
As protection measures against heatwaves, the Ministry recommends avoiding direct exposure to the sun, especially during midday hours (11:00-16:00) and calls on people to stay in cool, shady or air-conditioned areas, to wear light, light-colored and comfortable clothing, to use a hat and sunglasses, to drink plenty of water, even if they are not thirsty. Also, to avoid alcohol and sugary or caffeinated beverages, to consume light meals, rich in fruits and vegetables, to limit physical activity and exercise during hours of very high temperatures, to regularly monitor the Meteorological Service's forecasts for heatwave warnings and to protect infants and children from the heat. It says that you should never leave children or animals inside parked vehicles.
High temperature favors food spoilage and the growth of pathogenic microorganisms. It is mentioned and recommended to keep food in the refrigerator at appropriate temperatures, to avoid consuming food that has been left out of the refrigerator for many hours, and to practice good hygiene when preparing and storing food.
In the event of symptoms that may be related to exposure to high temperatures (intense thirst, weakness, dizziness, headache, confusion or high fever), citizens are urged to promptly contact their personal physicians for evaluation and guidance or to call the Ambulance Service at 112.
