The lack of nurses remains a "gangrene for the health system, as those in decision-making centers do not realize the investment they need to make in personnel so that the health system is adequately staffed and remains sustainable," the Pancyprian Nurses' Union (PASYNO) said in a statement, on the occasion of International Nurses' Day, which is honored on May 12.
"Unfortunately, the inaction of decision-making centers is leading the sector to decline, and the difficult working conditions in long-term sick leave, due to increased health problems, also discourages young people from choosing Nursing as a profession," it added.
PASYNO also states that the failure to take immediate measures for the occupational well-being of nurses will lead to a degradation of health services, "with serious consequences for mainly public hospitals, which the Governments have pledged to make autonomous and transform them into sustainable ones by operating autonomously."
Regarding International Nurses Day, PASYNO states that "today is a day of honor, recognition and respect for the work of nurses, who work in adverse conditions to support patients and offer the best care and health services."
"The nursing staff strives and offers nursing care, to the extent possible, to all patients, despite experiencing the consequences of chronic understaffing, having as a principle the oath they took that they will not leave any patient helpless and alone," it is emphasized.
