Pulmonology Society: Increased dust levels pose a risk to vulnerable groups

The Cyprus Pulmonology Society is sounding the alarm for the vulnerable groups of the population, which on Friday made recommendations to the public, regarding the increased levels of dust observed in the last days in the atmosphere and the expected increased temperatures in the following days.

As he emphasizes, "in case the dust descends to ground level, then patients who suffer from chronic lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, bronchial asthma, bronchiectasis and pulmonary fibrosis, are recommended to avoid unnecessary movements and remain particularly consistent with their medication treatment".

"If they present," he notes, "symptoms of worsening, such as difficulty breathing, irritating cough, wheezing or hoarse voice, they should immediately contact their treating physician."

Besides, he adds that "if the average hourly concentration values of inhalable suspended particles in the atmosphere increase further, then vulnerable population groups (children, the elderly and the sick) should avoid moving in open spaces and take protective measures".

He also notes that the public can be informed by the Air Quality Cyprus application of the Department of Labor Inspection, about the hourly air quality in the atmosphere.
