The pensioners are planning a vigorous protest against the government if their problems are not resolved.
This is stated in a statement by the Union of Cypriot Pensioners (EKYSY), which, as it notes, has decided "to give the government one last credit of time" to solve the problems and expects the President of the Republic and the four competent Ministers, in which sent a relevant memorandum from last year, to set a meeting in the hope of finding solutions.
In addition, it states that it plans to hold a Pan-Cypriot Conference on October 3, 2024, while warning that "if until then the problems continue to remain unresolved, then a dynamic demonstration of pensioners' protest against the government will take place."
EKYSY demands that measures be taken to deal with punctuality, bearing in mind that the government's measures to date are temporary and without substantial benefit.
As he states, "some of them expire at the end of June, while those that have been renewed, such as the continuation of the electricity subsidy, do not solve the serious problem of the tragically high EAC bills that consumers are asked to pay due to the heat."
He emphasizes that "significant compensatory benefits must be given, pensions and the poverty threshold must be increased, the amount of the benefit granted through the Minimum Guaranteed Income must be increased, the serious problem arising from the purchase of medicines not covered by the GeSY and to finally make a proposal on behalf of the government regarding the demand for the abolition of the 12% penalty imposed on the pensions of those who retire after many years of work at the age of 63".
The EKYSY also demands the improvement of the legislation on the men's widow's pension, so that it is given to all widowers.
