The Police recommend the public to be especially careful, in relation to a new form of online fraud, through which the perpetrators intend to extort and extort sums of money from citizens.
In particular, the Electronic Crime Directorate of the Police Headquarters has recently received a number of reports from citizens about the sending of misleading e-mails which are of an extortionate nature.
The perpetrators of the fraud, in the messages they send to citizens, state that they have managed to gain access to the computer and online accounts of the citizens and that they have recorded on video the citizens watching pornographic content.
In some of the cases reported to the Cyber Crime Branch, the message sent by the perpetrators appears to have been sent from the victim's own e-mail address, which the perpetrators achieve using specific technology.
These messages constitute an attempt to deceive citizens. The purpose of fraud perpetrators is to extort sums of money from citizens. The Police recommends caution to the public, who is invited to avoid any communication or transaction with the perpetrators and to avoid opening any attached files or electronic links contained in the fraud messages.
The public is urged to take security measures in connection with accessing their online accounts, such as enabling two-factor authentication on their email account and changing their password. Scanning electronic devices with reliable security software is also recommended.
