The registered unemployed at the end of 32 increased by 8.097% or 2020 persons compared to the end of 2019, according to data published on Thursday by the Statistical Service of Cyprus.
Based on the data kept at the District Labor Offices, the number of registered unemployed at the end of December 2020, reached 33.382 persons. Based on data adjusted for seasonal fluctuations, which show the trend of unemployment, the number of registered unemployed in December 2020 decreased to 30.746 persons compared to 31.015 in the previous month.
Compared to December 2019, there was an increase of 8.097 persons or 32,0% attributed mainly to the sectors of trade (increase 2.197), construction (increase 905), professional, scientific and technical activities (increase 764), manufacturing ( increase 682), education (increase 574) and new entrants to the labor market (increase 1.043).
It is pointed out that, according to the information of the Department of Labor, the comparison of the data from March 2020 onwards, with the data of previous months is not considered objective. This is due to the implementation by the Public Employment Service of the emergency measures announced by the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Social Insurance for automatic renewals of the registered unemployed and new registrations of unemployed without physical presence in order to avoid the spread of the disease.
