The BB Police confirmed that on October 2, a Greek Cypriot was sentenced by the BB Court in Dhekelia to four years in prison for possession of Class A and B drugs with intent to supply.
The 52-year-old from Xylofagou, who was already wanted for similar offences, was arrested near his village on May 6, initially for possession of just one gram of crystal methamphetamine, and has remained in custody since then. Forensic analysis of his mobile phone linked him to the supply of drugs, leading to much more serious charges and a sentence by the Senior Judge in Dhekelia.
Lieutenant Commander Fanos Christodoulou praised the work of the Community Action Team, noting that the strong evidence forced the defendant to change his initial plea from "not guilty" to "guilty."
He said: "First of all, we should be proud of the sentence the court has handed him as it sends a clear message about how seriously we take such crimes. "I commend the excellent work of our police officers because although a gram of crystal meth doesn't sound like a lot, they have linked him to drug supply and he will now be behind bars for a long time.
"Initially he declared 'not guilty' but when strong evidence was presented he was forced to change his initial statement and this was done thanks to the excellent work of the police officers investigating the case."
