Accessibility to the natural and built environment, the equal and non-discriminatory enjoyment of the right of persons with disabilities to education, the provision of reasonable adjustments in the workplace, access to benefits and allowances related to disability, are our main concerns, states the Administrative Commissioner.
In a statement on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is celebrated every year on December 3, the Commissioner states that a key pillar of her Office's action is the continuous dialogue and feedback with the persons with disabilities themselves and their representative organizations for to ensure that their rights are not discounted and that their voices and wishes are heard.
In particular, he emphasizes that the primary goal has been to continue and strengthen cooperation with KYSOA, both in terms of promoting the rights of people with disabilities, as these are brought to KYSOA's attention by its members, and through KYSOA's more active participation in Advisory Committee to Monitor the Implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
"It cannot be accepted that any third party decides, regardless of whether it is the Executive or Legislative Power, without listening to and taking into account the views and positions of people with disabilities and their representative organizations," it states.
It is also reported that the Office of the Commissioner has already had extensive consultations with the Department of Social Integration of Persons with Disabilities, for the preparation of the final text of the bill to support decision-making by persons with disabilities, and it is hoped that it will be passed soon.
According to data from the World Health Organization, more than 1,3 billion people are people with disabilities, a percentage that corresponds to 16% of the world's population or one in six people. In countries with a life expectancy of more than 70 years, people live, on average, about 8 years, or 11,5% of their total life span, with some form of disability.
