The Civil Defense Force issued recommendations to the public to minimize the negative consequences of heavy rainfall, storms and tornadoes, following the announcement by the Department of Meteorology regarding isolated strong storms that are expected to affect the region from time to time. The recommendations to the public aim to prevent and properly prepare to minimize the risks and negative consequences, it is reported.
Specifically, for flood protection, the PA recommends that wells outside the home or workplace are not blocked and that gutters function normally. Also, for basements in vulnerable areas at risk of flooding, it recommends digging a special water accumulation pit and an automatic water pump, as well as removing valuable objects. For homes on a plot with a yard, it recommends leaving free soil so that the land can absorb water.
It also recommends securing objects that may be swept away by the water and moved, such as tanks, water heaters, etc., repairing any openings in fence walls, having sandbags ready to prevent water from entering the premises, while limiting movement and avoiding staying in underground spaces.
It also calls on the public not to cross a flooded road on foot or by car / bicycle / motorcycle, to abandon the car if it has stopped, as it may be swept away or flooded, to stay away from power lines, and not to approach areas where landslides have occurred.
After the flood, the public is advised to stay away from areas that have been flooded or are at risk of flooding in the coming hours, as the flood may have changed the characteristics of familiar areas and pose dangers from broken road surfaces and areas with dangerous slopes, or the waters may be contaminated if they have carried various types of objects or even animals with them.
It also recommends not to obstruct rescue teams and not to use the telephone without serious reason.
During restoration procedures, it is recommended that the power and water supply switches be turned off.
To protect against tornadoes, he recommends removing objects from the yard that could be moved by the tornado and securing those that are not secured. He also recommends keeping doors and windows closed, but opening interior glass shutters, to quickly equalize internal and external atmospheric pressure.
In the countryside, he urges the public to move away as quickly as possible from the areas where the tornado will pass, staying away from objects that can move and hit them. Otherwise, he recommends lying face down in a hollow, protecting their heads with their hands.
