The Department of Forestry issues a strong appeal to the public to be particularly careful this year and to avoid actions and activities that may cause fires, noting that the fire season has already begun and the Department's operational mechanism is in full development and operational readiness.
On the occasion of today's European Natura 2000 Day, the Department emphasizes that the protection of forests is everyone's business and the slogan this year is "The Forest Needs You".
As noted, 21 May, European Natura 2000 Day, is an important opportunity to highlight the value of our natural heritage and reaffirm our commitment to its protection. The Natura 2000 Network, it is stated, is the largest network of protected areas in the world, which ensures the protection of Europe's most valuable and threatened species and habitats.
As noted, Cyprus is among the European Union countries with the largest percentage of areas falling within the Natura 2000 network.
Cypriot forests, which cover more than 70% of the areas included in the Natura 2000 Network, constitute the backbone of the network in the country and a fundamental pillar for the conservation of biodiversity.
The Department of Forests manages state forests with the aim of sustainable development, maintaining natural balance and preserving them in perpetuity, it is reported.
Particular importance is given to fire protection, as forest fires constitute a constant threat to forests and the natural environment, and the Department of Forests systematically invests in prevention, preparedness and immediate intervention, with the aim of minimizing risks and protecting Natura 2000 areas from catastrophic consequences, it added.
