The British Bases Administration (BB) has implemented preventive measures at the official crossing points in Pergamon and Strovilia, following reports of suspected cases of foot-and-mouth disease in the occupied territories.
At the request of the Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus, the BB Administration installed disinfection facilities and suspended the transit of all products of animal origin.
BB Management stated that these measures aim to reduce any potential risk and demonstrate its commitment to supporting its partners wherever possible.
Although the disease has not been confirmed, the measures are considered precautionary, aimed at protecting the health of animals and the wider community, according to Mark Hartley, Head of Customs and Immigration in the BB Regions.
As he stated: "We are taking immediate and responsible measures. In close cooperation with the Veterinary Services of the Republic of Cyprus, we are doing everything possible to support our partners and ensure the safety of everyone, while maintaining the smooth operation of the crossing points."
