Within the next two or three weeks, the foreigners who have been living for months on the cease-fire line will be moved, the Deputy Minister of Immigration, Nikolas Ioannidis, said today in his statements after the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee of the Interior, in which he participated today, in order to inform its members about the actions and responsibilities of the Deputy Ministry.
"We have good indications that some states will accept some of these people and therefore within the next two or three weeks this issue will be resolved," said Mr. Ioannidis, answering questions from journalists about the case in question, but without to mention which countries these people will go to. "We don't want temporary camps in the dead zone," said the Deputy Minister, adding that it is a problematic situation that must disappear.
At the same time, he said that "the Republic of Cyprus will not shoulder the omissions of Turkey, which at least tolerates the transfer of these people", pointing out that according to the confession of the people who are currently in these camps, they traveled to the occupied territories by flights or by ships from Turkey. "We see a pattern that demonstrates the responsibilities of our neighboring country," he said, adding that Cyprus cannot shoulder the consequences of the omissions of a country that does not fulfill its international obligations.
Also, during the meeting of the Interior Committee, the Deputy Minister mentioned that a decision has been taken to remove the barbed wire that had been placed along the ceasefire line. He said that removal work will begin in the next few days and the material will be used for the needs of the National Guard or for other needs of the state.
