A man opened fire on a busy street in Sydney on Sunday before being arrested, Australian police announced, who said twenty people were injured, mainly from shrapnel.
The alleged perpetrator "was shooting indiscriminately at passing vehicles, including police vehicles," it explained in a statement.
It is estimated that he fired "between 50 and 100" shots, said Stephen Perry, acting New South Wales police chief.
Two hours later, police arrested a 60-year-old man, suspected of being the man who opened fire, in an apartment. He was taken to hospital where he was treated for injuries sustained during the arrest.
A man was taken to hospital with a gunshot wound after the incident and is in "serious" condition, police said. Nineteen others were treated for injuries sustained from shrapnel, mostly glass, some of whom required hospital treatment.
Gun attacks targeting crowds are comparatively rare in Australia.
Automatic and semi-automatic weapons have been banned in the Oceanian country since the 1996 attack in Port Arthur, Tasmania, when a man who authorities say acted alone killed 35 people.
