More than 20 people were injured when a car sped past a Christmas parade in Wokesa, Wisconsin, on Sunday, police said.

At 4:39 p.m. local time, (00:39 Cyprus time) a red SUV rushed into the city's Christmas parade and hit several people, said Gukessa Police Chief Dan Thompson, referring to 11 adults and 12 children who had to be served in hospitals.

A reporter for the local television station CBS58, part of the national network CBS, reported that at least one person was killed in the incident.

There are "dead," Mr Thompson later told a news conference about the incident, which authorities are still trying to gather information about. He declined to say how many people lost their lives.

"The injured have been taken to hospitals by ambulance, police and civilian cars," Thompson added. The police chief also told reporters that a person of interest has been identified as part of the ongoing investigation, without going into details. It is not clear what the motives of the person driving the car were. He said it was not yet known if it was a terrorist act.

Mr Thompson confirmed that at least one police officer had opened fire on the red SUV. He added that as far as he knows, there was no fire inside the vehicle.

A woman told local television station Fox6 that the SUV hit schoolgirls aged 9 to 15, members of a dance group that took part in the parade. There was silence at first, then screams were heard and people rushed to the spot to offer help, according to Fox6.

A second eyewitness said he heard the car crash as it fell on people and then screams and screams from the victims.

According to a third eyewitness estimate, the SUV had developed a speed of between 60 and 70 kilometers at the time it hit people.
