Tawy and Wahu belong to the native Zoe community, which has about 325 members.

Erik Jennings Simões, the doctor who took the photo, said Wahu was almost blind and had difficulty walking because of the man's urinary problems. He estimated that Tawy carried his father on his back for five or six hours.
