A ... love-struck Arizona woman drove two hours to try to save her marriage — but ended up shooting her 80-year-old husband when he insisted on a divorce, police said.
Christina Pasqualetto, 62, smiled broadly in her booking photo after being arrested for the attempted murder of her elderly husband Jon, who told officers he had to fight her.
Specifically, Pasculetto had driven two hours on Sept. 20 from their home in Gilbert to their second home in Prescott, where her estranged husband lived, and changed the locks, Prescott police said. She told officers she "didn't want a divorce" and began arguing with her husband when she found him in his bedroom, the New York Post reports.
"When he told her he still wanted a divorce and wouldn't change his mind, she pulled out a gun and shot him while he was still in bed," police said. "The victim was able to chase her off, the gun fell from her hand and she attempted to flee the home," police said. "During the incident, the victim hit his ex-wife with his hands and elbows to get away," police said of the elbow that left his wife badly bruised.
"The victim was eventually able to escape and ran to a neighbor's house to call 911," police added. John had suffered a gunshot wound to the wrist and was later taken to a Phoenix-area hospital with "non-life-threatening injuries." "The investigation revealed that the parties involved were in the midst of a divorce and had been separated for several months," police said.
The shot husband also told police his estranged wife had stolen checks and forged a check about a week earlier for $10.000 and cashed it. She admitted to the forgery and theft in an interview with investigators, police said. Christina was booked into the Yavapai County Jail on charges of attempted first degree murder, aggravated assault, forgery and theft. He was still in custody Tuesday, according to online records.
