For next Tuesday, September 17, the discussion scheduled for 11/9 between the President of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the leadership of the European Parliament on the composition of the next European Commission has been postponed, as Slovenia will have to complete internal procedures before it becomes official the name of the proposed Commissioner of the country.
According to a representative of the Commission who informed the media in Brussels, the Government of Slovenia informed the European Commission that the Parliament of the country will be called on Friday to submit its opinion on the proposal of the Government for the position of the Commissioner.
"Only after this step will the proposal for the candidate be complete and official," he pointed out.
It is recalled that last Friday Tomas Wessel, former head of the country's Court of Auditors, who had been nominated by Prime Minister Robert Golob, for the position of Commissioner of Slovenia, withdrew his candidacy, as a result, according to reports, of pressure from Mr. von der Leyen to certain countries, in the context of the effort to achieve gender balance in the new Commission.
On Monday, Slovenia confirmed that it is nominating diplomat Marta Kos for Commissioner. Currently, 10 of the 26 nominees (excluding Germany) are women.
Due to the need for the Slovenian Parliament to give the green light to Ms Kos, "the Commission has asked the European Parliament to postpone President Von der Leyen's presentation to the Conference of Presidents of the composition of the future College until the list of candidates," according to the spokesperson.
The meeting of the Conference of Presidents, consisting of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metzola, and the leaders of the political groups, will take place next Tuesday in Strasbourg, at 9 am (local time).
