The Kremlin believes that a meeting between Russian and US presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump is necessary.
However, he must prepare well, the Russian president's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, told reporters.
“Such a meeting is clearly on everyone’s lips. In many ways, we believe that it is, of course, necessary. It must be properly prepared, and this requires efforts at various levels of expertise. This requires the continuation of contacts between Moscow and Washington, which have already begun and are ongoing. There is no concrete evidence on this issue yet,” he said in response to a question about the possibility of Putin meeting with Trump in Saudi Arabia in May.
The US leader had previously said he would consider meeting Putin in Saudi Arabia during his visit to the kingdom in mid-May. Peskov explained, however, that Putin has no immediate plans to visit the Middle East.
Trump will travel to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates later this month to participate in a summit with leaders of Gulf countries, the Axios website reported.
Putin has not met with a sitting US president since he held a summit in Geneva in June 2021 with Trump's predecessor Joe Biden.
Putin and Trump have spoken by phone several times this year as the American leader tries to mediate an end to the war.
