The Paris Court of Appeal ordered the release of Nicolas Sarkozy on Monday afternoon after the conclusion of the hearing of the former president of the French Republic.
Sarkozy, who during the hearing described the 20 days he spent in prison (since October 21) as a "nightmare", will be under judicial supervision.
In addition, the court banned Sarkozy from having any contact with Justice Minister Géral Darmanin, who had visited him in prison at the end of October. This meeting had drawn criticism, particularly from judges.
According to reports, Sarkozy will depart from the Santé prison in the center of the French capital later today.
Earlier, the prosecutor had proposed to the Paris Court of Appeal that the former president of France be released from prison.
According to the reasoning of the prosecutor, Damien Brinet, "the extreme seriousness of the facts and the severity of the sentence should not be taken into account. Only the criteria of article 144 (of the Code of Criminal Procedure) are relevant."
As prosecutor Damien Brinet explained, the risks of colluding with potential accomplices or putting pressure on witnesses "support the request to place (Sarkozy) under judicial supervision."
