The European Union is starting today the process of checking the readiness of Macedonia and Albania for the start of negotiations, in June 2019, for the accession of the two countries to the EU.
Speaking to reporters in Skopje, Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hans explained that the examination would allow Macedonia and Albania to familiarize themselves with European rules, and that the EU would see if they were ready to comply with them. in particular in chapters on the rule of law.
"Let's start work, you have an appointment with history. So there is no time to lose. We are only at the beginning of a long journey ", said the Commissioner, who addressed the meeting of the National Council for European Integration in Skopje.
Referring to the referendum on the approval of this agreement, he called on the citizens to seize this opportunity. In particular, the Enlargement Commissioner stated,
"It is entirely up to you, the citizens of this proud nation, to decide on the future of the country in a free and sovereign way. "The door to the EU is open but you and only you will decide whether to seize this opportunity."
Addressing the Albanian government, he urged it to start work as soon as possible.
"Do not miss a single day, produce results to dispel any doubts," he stressed, starting the same process in Tirana.
