Iran will not accept US President Donald Trump's demands for unconditional surrender, the Islamic Republic's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said, stressing that neither peace nor war can be imposed on the Iranian people.
In a statement on Wednesday, Khamenei said Tehran would not succumb to threats or blackmail. “Anyone who knows Iran, its people and its history will never speak with threats,” he said. “The Iranian nation will not surrender.”
He also stressed that the people of Iran will not forget the blood of the "martyrs" and the attack on their territory, while praising the steadfast, courageous and consistent response of the Iranian nation to the recent case of the "senseless and malicious aggression of the Zionist enemy," as he said.
Khamenei also warned of the consequences of a possible US military attack, saying that "any intervention will undoubtedly have irreparable damage for the Americans."
His statement came hours after Israeli airstrikes hit Tehran on Tuesday night, sending residents into panic. Thousands of people fled the capital on Wednesday morning, fearing further attacks.
The situation in the region remains particularly tense, with international powers calling for restraint and de-escalation of tensions, while the possibility of a generalized conflict cannot be ruled out.
