The United States is deploying a powerful naval and air force to the Middle East, which likely means it is preparing the ground for a large-scale attack on Iran. According to reports by CNN and CBS News broadcast yesterday, the US armed forces are ready to begin striking Iran as early as the weekend, if ordered to do so by Donald Trump.
The American president, who had already decided to carry out airstrikes on Iran in June 2025, continues to threaten Tehran that he could resort to military intervention if the ongoing talks do not lead to an agreement on the Islamic Republic's nuclear energy program.
He withdrew the US from the 2015 international agreement on Iran's nuclear energy program, officially the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), in 2018, during his first term.
The presence of "such firepower (...) in the region creates momentum in itself. It's sometimes a little difficult to put the brakes on and say 'that's it, we're not doing anything'," says Susan Ziante, an analyst at the US Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Washington continues to send dozens of warships and military aircraft to the Middle East. It has now deployed tens of thousands of troops to bases across the region—some of which could prove vulnerable to Iranian retaliation.
