Turkish police raided homes in Istanbul and Izmir in the early hours of the morning, arresting many people, as reported by the opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet.
The newspaper's sources report that while the protests, mainly involving students, are particularly concentrated on university campuses and city centers, police raided the homes of many people in Istanbul this morning, arresting many people.
As it became known, the detentions were made on the grounds that "there was a violation of Law 2911 on Gatherings and Demonstrations."
Moreover, it was reported that a member of the Central Executive Council of the left-wing SOL Party, lawyer Deniz Demirdöğen, the SOL Party's Izmir provincial chairman and BirGün newspaper columnist Barış İnce were arrested in Izmir.
On the other hand, according to information obtained by Cumhuriyet, Barış İnce's wife, Sevil İnce, was also detained.
It was also reported that journalist Zeynep Kuray, photojournalists Bulent Kilic and Yasin Akgul were also arrested. They were arrested from their homes in the morning hours and taken to the Vatan police station in Istanbul.
In a statement issued by the Communist Party of Turkey (TKP), it was reported that TKP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Ahmet Dincel, Party Assembly Member Arda Hacıyusufoğlu and 3 party members were arrested. According to the statement, “The Communist Party of Turkey gathered in Saraçane last night with thousands of party members, volunteers and friends to defend the people’s right to engage in politics. Early this morning, TKP Istanbul Provincial Chairman Ahmet Dincel, Party Assembly Member Arda Hacıyusufoğlu and 3 of our party members were arrested from their homes.”
The Communist Movement of Turkey (TKH) also announced that three TKH members were arrested during house raids by police in the early hours of the morning on the grounds of “participation in a prohibited action.” The TKH statement said that “today, the police raided houses and made arrests in the early hours of the morning. In these operations carried out in Istanbul, three of our members were arrested on the grounds of ‘participation in a prohibited action.’”
