More than 800.000 asylum applications were registered in European Union member states, Norway and Switzerland by October, according to figures from the EU's Asylum Agency released today.

The number has increased by leaps and bounds since the corresponding period in 2022 and is the highest since 2016, according to today's issue of the newspaper Die Welt, which has data from the OEEA.

In 29 states, 801.459 asylum applications were submitted from January 1 to October 3.

The most spectacular increases were recorded by Latvia (+168%) and Estonia (+119%), which is attributed to the increase in migration flows through Belarus.

Germany recorded the third largest increase (+74%) compared to the same period last year.

On the other hand, the biggest decreases were recorded in Denmark (–56%), Malta (–54%), Cyprus (–52%) and Austria (–41%).

By far the country with the fewest asylum applications so far is Hungary (26).
