The presidential election in Turkey is going to a second round for the first time after the failure of both Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan and opposition candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu to receive 50% of the votes required to be elected to the office of the country's President.
With a count of 98.83%, Tayyip Erdogan receives 49,25%, Kemal Kilicdaroglu 45,05% and Sinan Ogan 5,28%. However, although Kemal Kilicdaroglu did not accept the results of Anadolu until late last night, in the morning together with the leaders of the other parties of the National Alliance who support him and the two Mayors, of Ankara and Istanbul, he appeared declaring: "We will definitely win in the second round of elections". The second round of elections is on May 28 and coincides with the anniversary of the Gezi protests that rocked Turkey ten years ago.
Political analysts estimate that two weeks is too long, pointing out that a lot can be done in two weeks. Tayyip Erdogan may have cleared the first hurdle last night, but he is still in danger.
Information even states that last night at the AKP offices in Ankara there was a climate of disappointment before Tayyip Erdoğan arrived from Istanbul to address his fans who were waiting for him.
The aim to win the presidential election from the first round failed and this caused discomfort in the ruling party. Also AKP's percentages fell to 35% compared to 42% that the party had received in the previous elections in 2018. Even AKP's seats decreased from 295 to 267 compared to 2018.
However, the People's Alliance of the governing coalition managed to obtain the majority of seats in the parliament with 318 seats and this was due to the increased percentages that Devlet Bakhceli's National Action Party (MHP) managed to win.
The MHP was the surprise of the election as it defied all opinion polls, managing to surpass 10% even though forecasts said it was in danger of not even getting the 7% electoral threshold to enter parliament. Analysts estimate that the terrorism card played by the AKP, claiming that the PKK and terrorists were on the side of Kemal Kilicdaroglu, benefited the MHP and hurt Meral Aksener's Good Party which failed to exceed 10% even though the polls put them at 12%. The Good Party finally received 9,96%.
Here are the percentages of the parties and the seats they won based on the results reported by Anadolu:
AKP 35,56% – 267 seats
CHP 25,63% – 168 seats
MP 10,04% – 51 seats
Good Party 9,96% – 44 seats
Green Left Party 8,77% – 62 seats
The People's Alliance of the government camp received 49,34% and 318 seats while the opposition People's Alliance received 35,69% and 212 seats.
