A 47-year-old man, owner of a small construction company, died on Monday outside Bologna while working in the sun.
Italian media reports that he was at a school building construction site and felt unwell shortly after 12 noon.
The unfortunate man, who had immigrated to Italy from Morocco and was named Ait el Azam Brahim, is the first death due to this year's heat wave affecting the country.
Meanwhile, in Milan, the president of the Lombardy region, Attilio Fontana, signed a decree that will take effect tomorrow. Until mid-September, on days when the alert is "on red", work under the sun, in agricultural businesses and construction sites, will be prohibited from 12:30 to 16:00.
This specific ban will not apply to public services and employees working under difficult conditions for the country's Civil Protection.
The extreme heat wave will continue to plague Italians tomorrow, Tuesday.
The alert will remain in place in 17 cities in the country. These include Bologna, Florence, Rome and Milan.
In northern Italy the mercury will exceed 35 degrees while in the central regions and the south it will reach 38°C.
Only in the Alpine region is precipitation expected, which may extend to Piedmont and Lombardy.
Meanwhile, in the last twenty-four hours a series of fires broke out in Sardinia, near the areas of Alghero and Ocieri.
Thanks to the relentless efforts of members of the country's fire department, Civil Protection and Forest Service, with the use of Canadair and helicopters, the situation was brought under control.
