At least 200 people were on the scene
At least 12 people were killed Thursday when a man stormed a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, setting it on fire. The gunman stormed the historic Borderline bar during a student celebration, according to a statement from local authorities.
Police sources said the perpetrator of the attack was dead inside the bar and warned that the death toll could rise.
"Firefighters and first police arrived at the scene where an armed attack was reported with many injured," according to a tweet from the local fire service.
According to the Los Angeles Times, citing police sources, at least 30 shots were fired, and an eyewitness said a man stormed the bar at 23.30pm when the venue was full of young people attending a student night and opened fire with a black revolver before detonate smoke that started a fire, then continue firing.
At least 200 people were at the bar at the time of the attack. Eyewitnesses report panic scenes inside the bar when the suspect started firing indiscriminately. Students and other patrons at the bar at the time used chairs and other heavy objects to break windows and escape, while others were locked in toilets.
"We fell to the floor and heard screams from everywhere," he said.
