The death sentence against those convicted of drug trafficking is set out in a plan to tackle the US opioid crisis, which US President Donald Trump is expected to unveil later in the day, three White House officials said Sunday.

At the same time, the Republican plan urges Congress to make the legislation much stricter in imposing penalties on those who commit this crime.

The White House proposal envisions reducing opioid prescriptions by a third over the next three years, US presidential officials told reporters.

Trump will unveil his proposals during an event in New Hampshire, one of the states hardest hit by the opioid epidemic.
